So immediately after writing that last entry (and choosing the hamster as my icon of choice) I found my hamster. She'd been dying for a while of a tumor, but had recovered recently, and started playing and running on the wheel and being much more active, so I was feeling very proud of her. But apparently the tumor was good for her as it kept her from escaping from the cage. Where my cats found her, and disemboweled her. She was still warm when I found her.
